I enjoyed the concept but thought it dragged on a tad too long。 Surprised by the ending。

This novel blends fantasy and history, romance and art, as it moves through time from 1714 to 2016。 It is a difficult book to describe as it takes the reader on many adventures throughout the centuries。 Addie LaRue makes a deal with 'the antagonist' - devil, god, a dark spirit? - in 1716, but gets something very different than what she expects。 Be careful what you wish for! The tale is told back and forth in time and forces the reader to note the dates at the beginning of each chapter to orient time and place。 The story is complex and detailed, has beautiful prose with rich images as you feel Addie's pain, and is also magical。 Readers will cheer for Addie as she navigates being alive over 300 years being obsessed with living, as well as happy for her relationship with Henry。 Instead of being forgettable as her 'curse' warrants, she becomes unforgettable。The hardcover book is 442 pages and perhaps could have been a bit shorter。 Addie's emotional cycle of regret and loneliness did make it somewhat repetitive, but I still enjoyed reading this adventure。 It is one which should be digested slowly to appreciate it all。 。。。more

Full of clichés, the story could have being condensed to 100 pages, + the main character is so plain and boring for someone who has lived three hundred years。 This is the first time reading this author and surely the last。

Good premise that draws you in, but fails to deliver。 Also betrays the very white geographical imagination of the author。 You telling me this woman lived 300 years and never travelled anywhere other than Europe and America and never witnessed anything significant?

Oh my goodness。 This book。 I wanted to tear through it, read it so quickly so I could find out how it ends, what happens, at the same time never wanting to find out because I enjoyed the story so much。 Oof, I can’t wait to read it again, a beautiful tale!

I’m not sure what to say about this book, honestly。 It was emotionally exhausting to read (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing) and the figurative language was beautiful and impactful, but a bit too wordy at times (constant figurative language also made it somewhat exhausting to read)。 There were a lot of great quotes that could be pulled from Thai book。 I did enjoy it overall, but I didn’t have that strong of an emotional connection to Addie or Henry。 I don’t know if that’s because I read it ov I’m not sure what to say about this book, honestly。 It was emotionally exhausting to read (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing) and the figurative language was beautiful and impactful, but a bit too wordy at times (constant figurative language also made it somewhat exhausting to read)。 There were a lot of great quotes that could be pulled from Thai book。 I did enjoy it overall, but I didn’t have that strong of an emotional connection to Addie or Henry。 I don’t know if that’s because I read it over such a long time (re: the exhaustion)。 It seemed like Addie only liked him because he was the only option she was presented with and not because of an actual emotional attachment。 The way the timeline jumped around so much in the made it a bit difficult to keep things straight, but it was an interesting literary tool to use and it did work for this novel。 Everyone loved this book and I’m a little sad I didn’t have the same glowing feeling when I read it。 Maybe I will try reading it again in the future and not so spaced out to see what I think! 。。。more

This is a classic story of making a deal with the devil。 Addie is a French woman who wants to leave the small town where she feels she is destine to live and die in。 Along comes green-eyed Luc who promises her the world。 Addie agrees to Luc's terms, and the stage is set。 The curse is that no one can remember Addie。 She is trapped in her own life as an outsider。 I found the reliving the same days with Addie and her favorite people and places in the groundhog-day-esque pattern compelling。 The audi This is a classic story of making a deal with the devil。 Addie is a French woman who wants to leave the small town where she feels she is destine to live and die in。 Along comes green-eyed Luc who promises her the world。 Addie agrees to Luc's terms, and the stage is set。 The curse is that no one can remember Addie。 She is trapped in her own life as an outsider。 I found the reliving the same days with Addie and her favorite people and places in the groundhog-day-esque pattern compelling。 The audio version read by Julia Whelan is superb and hypnotic。 Treat yourself to this excellent work! 。。。more

Not gonna lie—I would have cut this book by 1/4 or maybe even 1/3。 While the premise was interesting, there were many plot holes & plot dead-ends that never went anywhere。 It was an enjoyable read until it wasn’t and then I just skimmed to the last few chapters to see how it ended。 The best part was just the thought process behind what would happen if you could never die but also never leave a mark? But even that got a bit old after 300 pages。

this book was amazing。 5/5。 i’m now not sure what to do with myself now i’ve read it because it’s all i can think about, the storyline, the characters, everything about this book hits the spot。 it’s the perfect amount of romance, drama and everything else you would need in a book。 if you’re thinking of reading this book, and if your not considering read it anyway

This book, although starting out slow, actually blew me away。 So beautifully done。 It ensnares you slowly, until you realize it would be painful to set it down。 I delighted in its wickedness and treasured each word。 Gorgeous。

In my opinion, this was a nice read, but I think it has been overhyped。 The writing was nice, but I felt it was too cliché and a bit too angsty。 I think it is thought to be more clever than it is。 Still, I'm glad to have read it because there are a few good quotes in it that really struck me, my favorite being: “I am stronger than your god and older than your devil。 I am the darkness between stars, and the roots beneath the earth。 I am promise and potential, and when it comes to playing games, I In my opinion, this was a nice read, but I think it has been overhyped。 The writing was nice, but I felt it was too cliché and a bit too angsty。 I think it is thought to be more clever than it is。 Still, I'm glad to have read it because there are a few good quotes in it that really struck me, my favorite being: “I am stronger than your god and older than your devil。 I am the darkness between stars, and the roots beneath the earth。 I am promise and potential, and when it comes to playing games, I divine the rules, I set the pieces, and I choose when to play。” All this is to say, though, that I will not be raving about The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue。 。。。more

Maybe 3。5 stars。 I liked the concept of a girl that sells her soul to the devil, lives for 300 years and finds true love。 But it seemed like there was a lot of untapped potential。 I didn't feel emotionally connected to any character, except for maybe Henry。 And I could never truly picture Luc。 It also felt like maybe Addie could have had some sort of musings on the big historical events that happened in those 3 centuries?!? Even so, I was definitely involved enough in the book to want to finish Maybe 3。5 stars。 I liked the concept of a girl that sells her soul to the devil, lives for 300 years and finds true love。 But it seemed like there was a lot of untapped potential。 I didn't feel emotionally connected to any character, except for maybe Henry。 And I could never truly picture Luc。 It also felt like maybe Addie could have had some sort of musings on the big historical events that happened in those 3 centuries?!? I’m not sure how to review this book。 It did take about 25% before it took off。 I almost quit, but then read Melanie’s review, which covers it all。

“What is a person, if not the marks they leave behind?”4 stars。 Beautifully written。 I adore Schwab’s writing。 I don’t always jive with her plots/characters but her writing is always the highlight of her books for me。 The plot in this one though did hit for me。 For the most part。 Everything worked for me except for the romance though。 I just…no。I blame my disliking the romance in this on how much I just didn’t like the character of Henry。 I couldn’t connect with his character at all。 And I t “What is a person, if not the marks they leave behind?”4 stars。 Beautifully written。 I adore Schwab’s writing。 I don’t always jive with her plots/characters but her writing is always the highlight of her books for me。 The plot in this one though did hit for me。 For the most part。 Everything worked for me except for the romance though。 I just…no。I blame my disliking the romance in this on how much I just didn’t like the character of Henry。 I couldn’t connect with his character at all。 And I tried。 He’s a Gemini just like myself and he’s bi but I just was not feeling him。 I found him to be uninteresting and exhausting。 I can’t say that he was one dimensional or undeveloped because neither of those things are true。 He just didn’t interest me and found his chapters to be my least favorites。 I wanted to care but I just couldn't。Addie on the other hand, I absolutely adored her。 She’s a very interesting character and I loved her depth and the growth she goes through。 She’s been alive for over 300 years and I loved how she was able to adept to everything。 That was pretty cool。 Again, the romance between her and Henry did nothing for me because I think she deserved someone more on her level and he wasn’t it。 They just felt like good friends to me。There was some twists and turns that were a lot of fun in how much they caught me off guard。 I didn’t see them coming at all。 The ending of this was really freaking good and I loved how ambiguous it was。 I can see Schwab possibly doing a sequel and I wouldn’t be mad about it honestly。Besides the romance, I have to admit that this took a bit for me to get into。 The beginning part was really dry but once the story picks up the pacing stays pretty consistent throughout。Overall, not an absolute favorite of mine but it was still a really great read。 There’s some important life messages that Schwab gets across in this one and it is definitely a unique read。 。。。more

I listened to the audio book which took commitment as it was 17 hours, but I listened to it in 7 days so it deserves the fourth star just for holding my interest for so long。 Overall it was an intriguing story that had a lot of potential although it became way too melodramatic in the last third of the book and could have been a much shorter/tighter story without a lot of the repetition。 That being said I still liked it。

I can’t believe I’m giving a V。E。 Schwab book a 1 star, but here I am。。。 This book was so boring and repetitive! I don’t ever want to read a book that mentions “black curls”, “green eyes”, or the fucking “seven freckles that look like stars”!!! Ugh!!! I don’t mind a character-driven story, IF the characters are interesting。 But in this book, ALL the characters were one-dimensional and boring! I think I was only able to finish this book because of the audiobook, otherwise, I think I would have DN I can’t believe I’m giving a V。E。 Schwab book a 1 star, but here I am。。。 This book was so boring and repetitive! i really enjoyed this book, there was so much that i loved and didn’t love。 let’s start with what i liked。 the premise of the story for one, i expected it to play out like Addie living a perfect life, but she didn’t, she had flaws and her deal had flaws, so she had to learn her way around it and i found those parts reallyenjoyable。 i liked the characters, for the most part。i didn’t like the back and forth between past and present, i kept getting confused sometimes since i was listening to the au i really enjoyed this book, there was so much that i loved and didn’t love。 let’s start with what i liked。 the premise of the story for one, i expected it to play out like Addie living a perfect life, but she didn’t, she had flaws and her deal had flaws, so she had to learn her way around it and i found those parts reallyenjoyable。 i liked the characters, for the most part。i didn’t like the back and forth between past and present, i kept getting confused sometimes since i was listening to the audiobook (mom life) and found some of the flashbacks were really dragging and boring。 i could’ve done without a few of them。the ending… i still don’t know how to feel。 i’m surprised, but am i really? addie is definitely the type of person to pull a stunt like that。i really enjoyed the book and how addie sprinkled her life into history, but i’m not sure i enjoy how it ended, i almost wanted something else to happen。。。SPOILERS BELOWi mean it, i warned you…so, the fact that Luc practically put Addie and Henry together rather than if being a twist of fate, is interesting and unexpected, i really liked Luc, he wanted Addie, and grew to *love* her in his own dark way。After thinking about it, I would’ve liked to see Addie sacrifice her life for Henry, not her soul, because she’s been doing that for 300 years, but finally surrender to let Henry live, and not give Luc the satisfaction。 *OR* Henry actually died and Addie finally surrenders, and she’s finally free, i know it’s sadder but i don’t know, i has that thought going on when I found out how long Henry had。I loved Henry and Addie, i think they were a good pair for each other and gave each other a little bit of happiness for a while。 just as needed。okay, hmm, i think that’s it。 the only reason it’s not a 5 star favorite is because i felt it dragged a bit and could’ve done without some of the backstories, and i just didn’t love it。 no other reason than just not connecting to the story/characters as much。 。。。more
